The restart of Viaplay tells the story of 40 year old inspector John Rebus at a psychological crossroads after an argument with a notorious Edinburgh gang. Rebus's work was increasingly driven by technocrats, and he became embroiled in a toxic incident he knew he needed to end. He was almost replaced in his daughter's life by his ex-wife's wealthy newlywed husband, and he began to doubt whether he still had a role to play - whether as a homemaker or a police officer.
