In recent years, a groundbreaking new study on the effectiveness of contraceptive pills has been released. Research in Denmark shows that women who take birth control pills and other forms of hormone contraception are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with depression than women who do not take birth control pills or hormone contraception. Another study found that hormonal contraception appears to be associated with a high risk of cancer. Negative news is not new for birth control pills. The contraceptive pill was first introduced in 1961, and its early versions were associated with cancer risk and life-threatening blood clots. However, hormonal contraception remains the most popular contraceptive method in the UK, with over 3 million women now regularly taking synthetic hormones. So should they worry about its safety? A specially commissioned national survey has revealed the areas of greatest concern for British women - from mental health to cancer risk and decreased libido.
