Magdalena and Maria are twin sisters. They separated when they were born and knew nothing about each other's existence. Maria fled the boarding school she had attended since childhood and found a job as a singer and dancer at a coffee shop in Marseille. Magdalena lives with her foster parents and works at an art museum. There is an invisible bond between the two sisters, which leads them to the same tragic end. Director Werner Schroeter gained a reputation as an experimental filmmaker, with some praising him as an underrated genius, while others berating him as a self indulgent vulgar vendor. Deux "can be said to be Schroder's most ambitious, unsettling, and repulsive work to date. The director must seize the opportunity to distance himself from the audience; Starting from the first ten minutes of the movie, it is obvious that this is not an easy journey. The narrative freely switches between seemingly unrelated events, alternating between realistic and stylized fantasy dream sequences, occasionally shocking the audience with scenes of lesbian sex and a woman slowly being exposed. Playing multiple roles with several actors only adds a sense of skill and confusion, which is regrettable, as there are clearly many outstanding acting talents in the play, especially Isabel Huppert. The ruthless absurdity and self indulgence of this movie are so extreme, so reckless, and so repulsive that it is difficult to take them seriously.
